As explained, sleep is rather hit or miss. At best it is revivifying after 6 or 7 hours, but at worst it just doesn’t happen! Most people are somewhere in-between, some days they sleep well, other days 8 hours still doesn’t seem close to enough. This depends on factors like the state of the mind when going to bed, the state of digestion in the body, and the state of the nervous system prior to sleep (i.e. are the nervous frayed, anxious, tensed, passed exhaustion?)

The yogis of India saw this pattern in humans many thousands of years ago, and so conscious relaxation was “invented”. So, yes, sleep is relaxing, but it is not always so because of its unreliability. But this conscious form of descending into the state of willed “sleep” without losing awareness is never going to fail if performed correctly.
