I try to relax in yoga classes, but why is so difficult to switch off?
Concentration! What can I say? Take a ride into the relaxation teachings given by your teacher, and keep your mind on those thoughts only. Concentration is not just a passing thought to the words of the teacher, it is to hang on the words like your life depends on it. The teacher is taking over your mind for a short time so that they can guide you passed your normal thoughts, and with the techniques they are giving you, lead you to a definite state of relaxation. But if you are hearing, “follow your breath…….” And it is entwined with “Hmm….what shall I eat when I get home?” coming from your own mind, you are in trouble! But if all you do is listen to the guidance and act upon it whilst you are lying down, then as long as the teacher knows their job, you should relax well.
